Z Scale Train Layouts

Z scale train layouts (1:220) is the smallest of all model railroad layouts. The beauty of this minature train scale is that it is possible to build a layout almost anywhere (briefcase, custome boxes, coffee table). Designs are limitless but can also be somewhat challenging with this small scale.the

Due to the small size, the weight of the locomotives make it difficult for operation. Therefore, it is important that track must be placed, connected and kept clean for a smoth running set.The pulling power of these small engines determines the amount of cars that they will pull. Also, there tends to be a limit of available products and manufacturers, so many Z scale hobbiest make or create their own assecories.

If you want to start with a complete set, then we recommend the  Marklin Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy American Starter Z scale Train Set.This set comes complete with trains, tracks, buildings and wirings to start you off "on the right track" with Z gauge.

Marklin manufacturing is the inventor (1972) and still the dominating manufacturer of Z scale train sets. There continues to be a growing number of manufactureres around the world. The internet makes many of these suppliers only a few clicks away.

Despite its limits and difficulty of operation, Z scale train layouts have increased in popularity for apartment dwellers in North America, Japan and China. As with most train layouts, once you get started it's hard to stop.
